WordPress Trademark Transferred to Non-Profit

Matt Mullenweg announced yesterday on his blog that his company, Automattic, has transferred the trademark for WordPress to the WordPress foundation. This is big news because it means that WordPress’s name is now separate from any company.

From Mullenweg’s blog:

It’s important for me to know that WordPress will be protected and that the brand will continue to be a beacon of open source freedom regardless of whether any company is as benevolent as Automattic has been thus far.

So what do you all think? Is this as big a deal as every is making it out to be? I, for one, think it is.
